Mafate: The Wild Heart of Reunion Island in Pictures

Welcome to one of the most magnificent and preserved jewels of our island: the Mafate cirque. A true natural sanctuary, this cirque is the only one in Reunion Island that is not accessible by car. Far from the hum of engines and urban bustle, the cirque offers a rare tranquility. Here, the soundscape is dictated by nature and birdsong, barely punctuated by the morning passage of helicopters ensuring essential supplies for the “ilets” or discovery flights.

To give you a taste of this timeless experience, we are delighted to share three superb videos from the West Tourist Office.

Mafate: Much More Than Just a Hike

To truly understand Mafate, you must know that this cirque is above all a land of freedom and memory. A former refuge for runaway slaves, the “marrons,” this roadless territory has preserved an authenticity and serenity found nowhere else.

We invite you to watch this short video that captures the very essence of this “péi”: between dizzying trails, the smiles of inhabitants, and wood-fired cooking.

In this first video, let yourself be carried away by the majesty of the landscapes. You will discover the vastness of the ramparts that protect this unique place and the very special atmosphere that reigns there, between clouds and peaks.

The Most Beautiful Viewpoints

The second video offers an exceptional panorama of the various “ilets” (hamlets) that make up the cirque. It is a true visual invitation to walk the trails that connect these small isolated villages, where the welcome from the “Mafatais” is always unforgettably warm.
