The Majestic Ballet of Humpback Whales in Reunion Island
Every year, between June and October, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean become the stage for an absolutely magnificent natural spectacle. Humpback whales travel thousands of kilometers from Antarctica to mate and give birth in our Reunion sanctuary.
We invite you to discover these moments of pure magic through a video produced by the West Tourism Office, which captures the beauty and power of these giants of the seas.

An encounter rooted in respect
Admiring a whale performing an impressive breach or observing a mother and her calf is an experience that stays with you forever. However, this opportunity comes with a duty: that of protection.
In Reunion Island, cetacean watching is governed by a Charter for Approach and Observation (Charte d’Approche et d’Observation). It ensures the tranquility and safety of the animals, as well as your own. If you are planning a sea trip to meet them, we strongly encourage you to choose certified providers who scrupulously respect these rules of distance and calm.
Where to watch them?
While boat trips offer exceptional proximity, the spectacle is often visible from the shore! Armed with a simple pair of binoculars or even without, you can spot the blows and tail slaps from the many viewpoints along the west and south coasts.
Get your cameras ready, but don’t forget to savor the present moment: the majesty of these whales reminds us how precious our island’s biodiversity is.
See you soon for new discoveries on our “Island Intense.”
